A journalist named Amanullah Aman was attacked in the UNO office room in Khetlal, Joypurhat for publishing news. He is the Khetlal Upazila correspondent of Daily Kalbela. Journalists from the district and upazila have strongly condemned and protested the incident. They have demanded that the culprits be arrested immediately and brought to justice.
According to local sources and eyewitness journalists, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sanjida Chowdhury was talking to journalists in the office room of the Khetlal Upazila Nirbahi Officer on Tuesday afternoon. At that time, Khetlal Upazila BNP General Secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique entered the office room of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer with his men. Amanullah Aman was also sitting with other journalists present there. Recently, journalist Amanullah Aman was attacked and abused for publishing news about the extraction of soil and sand from a government pond in the daily Kalbela. At that time, some activists and supporters who came with the BNP leader from behind attacked and beat Aman. Later, the police came and brought the situation under control.
The victim journalist, Amanullah Aman, the Khetlal Upazila correspondent of the daily Kalbela, said that BNP leader Abu Bakkar Siddique and his people attacked and beat me in a pre-planned manner due to the publication of the news. I am currently undergoing treatment. I will file a complaint tomorrow. Hopefully, I will get justice.
Regarding the incident, Khetlal Upazila BNP General Secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique denied the allegations against him and said, this unexpected incident happened within a couple of minutes. Nothing major happened, but there was a push and shove with other people.
Despite repeated attempts to contact Khetlal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sanjida Chowdhury on his mobile phone regarding the incident, he did not answer the phone.
Khetlal Police Station OC Moktadul Alam said, when the Upazila Nirbahi Officer called me in this regard, I went to his office and did not see any fight, but I saw a tense atmosphere and tried to bring the situation under control. Then I saw about 40/50 angry people below the office. They were removed from there. Later, Amanullah asked Aman to go to his house. When Amanullah was going home, he tried to attack him again as he was going towards the main gate of the Upazila Parishad, the situation was controlled and he was helped to go safely.
