Millions of people are suffering due to the poor condition of the Chaparhat to Jawrani road in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat. This road is now a death trap. The road, including the Kaliman bridge, which has not been renovated for a long time, has become impassable due to last year’s floods. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people who travel on this road every day are facing extreme suffering.

‎On the ground, it can be seen that although 2 kilometers of the road from Chaparhat to Kaliman bridge have been paved, large holes and ditches have been created in various places. In some places, the carpeting has come off and dirt roads have emerged. Again, in some parts, one side of the road has collapsed. The edges on both sides of the Kaliman bridge have collapsed, making it unusable for traffic.

Even though small vehicles are moving at the risk of life, they are sometimes involved in accidents. The bridge can collapse at any time, causing major accidents. Moreover, the condition is even worse as about one and a half kilometers of the road from Kaliman to Jaorani is unpaved. Locals complain that the condition of the road has worsened since the start of the monsoon season. The road is now full of mud and potholes, making it dangerous to travel on. Thousands of people are suffering every day due to this poor condition of the road.

‎Talking to local residents, it has become very difficult for passengers and vehicles to travel due to mismanagement of the road. Students of schools, colleges, madrasas, employees and businessmen are all facing this problem. Especially, children are spending a lot of time going to school and workers are spending a lot of time reaching the office. Many families are now forced to take other routes for their work. Which is a loss of both time and money for them. Health risks have also increased due to this road problem in daily life. The residents are getting sick in silent suffering because they do not have a safe road to walk on in their daily lives. It is especially dangerous for the elderly and children.

The risk of accidents is increasing due to the mud and potholes on the road. They complain that the area is becoming more neglected day by day due to lack of timely repairs. Every year, the road is severely damaged by floods during the rainy season. Then, the local residents try to temporarily repair some parts on their own initiative and make it suitable for movement. However, it is not sustainable. About one million people come to Chaparhat, the largest market in Lalmonirhat district, through this road every day. It is one of the main routes from Jaorani.

Besides, it is the only connecting road to Chandrapur Bazar via Satirpar-Burirhat-Latabar-Botola, which has created a complex situation.

‎On behalf of the affected locals, Dr. Md., a resident of Latabar village and assistant professor of Aditmari Government Degree College, When talking to Hasanuzzaman Jewel, he said that this is one of the neglected towns of Bangladesh after independence. For a long time, the people of this area have become victims of political vendetta and have been deprived of development. Even though the condition of the roads, starting from electricity connection, was poor, the then public representatives did not pay any attention. Although the electricity problem was solved to some extent through private initiatives, the development of the roads was not possible. Hopefully, the current government will pay attention to this neglected town and accelerate development.

‎A source in the government department said that a project has been taken up for road renovation, but it has not been implemented yet. They have assured that the situation will improve soon. However, there is disappointment among the locals, because they are tired of hearing such assurances again and again.
