Tehmina Akhter, an ongoing 2026 SSC examinee, has received the ‘Kanya Sahoshika’ award for showing courage against her child marriage in Zianagar Upazila of Pirojpur.

On Wednesday (April 22) morning, Pirojpur Deputy Commissioner Abu Said handed over a memento, certificate and financial assistance for her studies at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Her parents were present at the time.

It is learned that when Tehmina’s family organized the marriage against her wishes, she objected. Faced with pressure, she took refuge in Zianagar Police Station on April 18. When the matter came to light, the marriage activities were suspended with the intervention of the upazila administration and locals and a pledge was taken from the family not to let such incidents happen in the future.

Tehmina is a 2026 SSC examinee of Zianagar Government Setara Smriti Secondary Girls’ School.

At the ‘Kanya Saashika’ award ceremony, the Deputy Commissioner said that child marriage is a social disease, everyone has to work together to prevent it. He urged parents to be more aware of this issue.

Locals are seeing Tehmina’s initiative as an inspiring example in preventing child marriage.
