Rajib Dey :
The process of quickly reopening the closed jute mills in the country is underway. Reopening the mills will increase employment and boost the economy, said State Minister for Textiles and Jute Ministry Shariful Alam.
He said, ‘The tender process and EoI notification have already been completed for the reopening of the closed mills. The government is mainly interested in operating the mills through public-private partnership (PPP) or private entrepreneurs. It has planned to revive the industrial zones through the active participation of domestic and foreign investors, so that the country’s economy gets a boost. This is one of the election promises of the current government.’
State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md. Shariful Alam said these things after visiting the Cooperative Jute Mills in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi on Tuesday (April 21). The State Minister then visited the ‘Bangladesh Jute Mills and PRAN-RFL Group’s industrial park in Ghorashal Upazila.
Stating that the standard of living of the people of Narsingdi will be improved, State Minister Md. Shariful Amol said, ‘These industrial factories in Narsingdi once employed thousands of people and had the passion of the locals. If the mills are reopened, almost 100% employment will be provided from the local level. However, technical positions may be recruited from outside. This will play a role in improving the standard of living of the locals.’
State Minister Shariful Alam further said, ‘To bring back the lost glory of the golden fiber, emphasis is being placed on improving the quality and research of jute seeds. In particular, work is being continued with the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) to make the yield of local seeds competitive compared to seeds from neighboring countries. Meanwhile, the government is also working to ensure that jute farmers get a fair price for jute.’
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute Subrata Sikder, Joint Secretary Hafsa Begum, Chairman of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) Kabir Uddin Sikder, Deputy Secretaries Saiful Islam and Shahdat Hossain Kabir, and local BNP leaders and representatives of the district administration were present at the time.
