Sharifa Begum Shiuli, Rangpur Correspondent: A planned attack on a journalist and his family at Bara Darga Bazar in Kalyani Union No. 1 of Pirgachha Upazila of Rangpur was planned at night, on the pretext of an arbitration meeting.
The incident took place at around 11 pm last Thursday (April 2nd) in the grounds of Bara Darga Ideal School in Mahiganj Metropolitan Area, adjacent to Bara Darga Bazar, Pirgachha.
The complainant and the victim Shukrana said that there is a hardware business called RM Traders in Bara Darga Bazar. From there, Nazrul Mistry took goods worth 49,004/- (fifty-nine thousand four) taka in the balance, about a year and a half ago. After two months, when I asked Nazrul for money, he did it for a year and a half, but Nazrul Mistry did not pay the money owed for the goods. Last year, we did a Halkhata to collect the shop’s dues. During that Halkhata, when I gave Nazrul Mistry the Halkhata card, he threw the Halkhata card at me. And said, I will not pay your dues. You can collect them as you wish. Suddenly, on Thursday, 02/04/2026, when Nazrul Mistry came to our shop in the morning, my father asked him for the money owed to him, Nazrul Mistry immediately said excitedly to my father, I will not pay the money. Let’s see how you get the money. Then I told Nazrul to leave the bike key. I will give the money owed to us and take the key. Nazrul Mistry left the bike at that time. We then informed Shamsul Haque Lipu, member of ward no. 7 of Kalyani Union No. 1, about the incident and gave the bike key to the member. In view of this, last Thursday at around 10:30 pm, Md. Shafiqul, member of ward no. 8 of Kalyani Union No. 1, and Shamsul Haque Lipu, member of ward no. 7, took the responsibility of handing over the money owed to them and sat in a well-planned meeting with 60 to 70 people at the Ideal School ground adjacent to Baradarga Bazar. Suddenly, when we were called to that meeting at night, my father and three brothers went to the meeting. 6 members and two panel chairmen were present in the meeting. During the meeting, towards the end, when I was giving an important speech, Nazrul Mistry and the people called Zahidul Bepari and as per the previous plan, Shahidul Khalifa, Khorshed Alam, Jihad and many others started beating me, my father and brothers, and me indiscriminately with knives, chairs, scissors and sticks. They grabbed me by the throat and strangled me. They kicked my testicles and at one point, Nazrul Mistry hit me on the head with scissors with the intention of killing me, causing a deep wound. And I immediately became unconscious. The members and panel chairmen present, along with a few others, rescued me and admitted me to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. There, my head needed two stitches. I went home after undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical for five days.
In this regard, Shamsul Haque Lipu, a member of Ward No. 7 of Kalyani Union Parishad No. 1, said, Shukurana’s family received 50,000 taka from Nazrul Mistry as arrears of goods. When Nazrul Mistry asked for that money, he got agitated. Shukurana took the keys of the motorcycle. And said, “Give us the money we owe and take the car.” As Shukurana had said, Nazrul left the car and left. Later, Shukurana’s family called me and gave me the keys. That night, four members including me and two panel chairmen sat in a meeting with both parties. When Shukurana spoke at the end of the meeting, Nazrul Mistry’s people started harassing Shukurana’s family. When I called Humayon Ahmed, a member of Ward No. 4 of Kalyani Union Parishad No. 1, on a cell phone, he said that we were 6 public representatives present there. Nazrul Mistry and his associates beat up Shukrana’s family members on the orders of Jahidul Bypari.
Nesar Mia, the panel chairman of Kalyani Union Parishad No. 1, said that Nur Islam (Shukrana’s father) brothers bought goods worth 50,000 taka from their shop. When Shukrana took the motorcycle key, a meeting was held at night in the presence of 4 members and two panel chairmen, and Nazrul Islam and Jahidul Bypari attacked Nur Islam brothers in our presence. This is a very sad incident.
When Nazrul Islam, who bought the goods in Baki, was called on his cell phone to inquire about the incident, he said, I bought the goods in Baki from Shukrana’s shop about a year and a half ago. He got some money from me. Last Thursday, when I went in front of the shop, Shukrana’s father asked for money. If I could not pay the money immediately, he took the bike key and said, “Leave the bike.” I brought the money and took the bike. Later, I left the bike. That afternoon, Shukrana’s family called Litu member and gave him the key and gave him the bike. At night, the member called a meeting for the money owed. At the end of the meeting, while Shukrana was speaking, our people started fighting, and Shukrana was injured in the fight. My brother got hurt in his hand and teeth.
When asked about this, Mahiganj Metropolitan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Maidul Islam said, “We have received a complaint, the officer will go to the spot. If the truth of the incident is found, legal action will definitely be taken.”
