BNP Chairman’s advisor and former World Bank senior health officer Dr. Ziauddin Haider said that an initiative has been taken to launch a primary healthcare unit in each union to provide modern healthcare at the grassroots level of the country. Tarique Rahman has already given instructions in this regard.Ā
He told these things to reporters while visiting Jhalokati Sadar Hospital on Tuesday (March 24) afternoon.Ā
Dr. Ziauddin Haider said that each health unit at the union level will have a doctor, a diploma assistant, a midwife, a nurse, a lab technician and a pharmacist. In addition, each unit will have three hubs, which will serve as centers for health awareness and disease prevention activities.Ā

He further said that if the treatment of patients is not possible at the unit level, they will be referred to the upazila or district health complex. There is a plan to bring the health workers currently working at the union level under an integrated unit and deliver healthcare to every home.Ā
During the visit, Dr. Haider visited various units of the hospital including the emergency department, women and children’s ward, medicine and surgery department. He spoke to the admitted patients and got a first-hand impression of the quality of medical services, medicine supply, testing facilities and the hospital environment. While the patients and relatives praised the sincerity of the doctors during this time, many expressed dissatisfaction with the bed shortage, shortage of medicines, room space shortage and cleanliness. He listened to the issues with importance and drew the attention of the concerned.Ā
Later, Dr. Haider exchanged views with the officials on the overall management of the hospital, manpower shortage and infrastructural limitations. He emphasized on taking necessary steps to improve the quality of services.Ā
Present at the event were Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmud Shakil of Dhaka Children’s Hospital, Superintendent of Jhalakati Sadar Hospital Masum Iftekhar, Consultants Dr. Mahmud Hasan and Dr. Abual Hasan, along with doctors, nurses and officials from various departments.Ā
