Attack on Rajshahi Barendra Press Club President: Demand for arrest of those involved

​Rajshahi has become agitated in protest against the armed attack and extortion demand on Rajshahi Barendra Press Club President Rezaul Karim.

At 12 noon on Sunday (March 8), journalist leaders strongly condemned this heinous incident in a huge human chain organized at Saheb Bazar Zero Point in the city and demanded the immediate arrest of the identified terrorists.

​Conducted by Rajshahi Barendra Press Club Vice President Md. Rahmat Ullah, speakers at the human chain expressed their anger and said that this attack was carried out by renting a microbus in a planned manner with the intention of killing Rezaul Karim.

The speakers warned that the perpetrator cannot have any political or social identity. Calling on the police, they said that stricter programs will be announced if the accused are not brought under the law soon.

Rajshahi Barendra Press Club advisor and Desh TV representative Kazi Shahed, former president Abu Kawsar Makhon, general secretary Shamsul Islam, Rajshahi bureau of Daily Kalbela Amjad Hossain Shimul, general secretary of River City Press Club Masud Rabbani, Rajshahi Reporters Unity deputy general secretary Mizanur Rahman Tony and office secretary Ibrahim Hossain also spoke in solidarity with the human chain.

Rajshahi Barendra Press Club presidium members Liaqat Hossain, Faruk Ahmed, treasurer Mamunur Rashid and member Shahin Sagar also spoke.

Rajshahi Press Club office secretary Mozammel Hossain Babu, executive member Rajib Ali Ratul, general secretary of Greater Rajshahi Divisional Press Club Md. Masud Rana, Acting Organizing Secretary Sakhawat Ullah Shuvo and Women’s Affairs Secretary Tarana Akhter Jinia.

Also present was Rajshahi New Government Degree College Chhatra Dal convener Sabbir Ahmed, expressing solidarity. IHT branch Chhatra Dal general secretary Ayatullah Komeni, Ward No. 3 BNP general secretary Ratan Ali, and Swechchhasebak Dal’s Ward No. 3 Shanto Islam of Ward No. 3.

Incidentally, Nur Islam Milon and his associates had been demanding a ransom of Tk 4 lakh for several days in the name of managing the Barendra Press Club located in the area. Due to this, a group of terrorists carrying domestic weapons, machetes and Chinese axes entered the club at around 8 pm on Saturday (March 7) and carried out a rampage. When the president refused to pay the ransom, the main accused Nur Islam Milon pulled out a pistol and threatened the president.

​At one stage of the attack, a terrorist named Suruj Ali tried to hit Rezaul Karim in the stomach with a sharp weapon, but he resisted with his hand. This caused a deep wound on his thigh and required a total of 13 stitches. He is currently undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital.

​General Secretary Shamsul Islam has filed a case against Nur Islam Milon, Suruj Ali, Mishal, Said Ali, Ibrahim and Rentu, along with 10-15 other unidentified people, at the Boalia Model Police Station.

​Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalia Model Police Station Rabiul Islam said that the police visited the scene and seized a microbus (registration number: Comilla-Ch-51-0028) abandoned by the attackers. A case has been registered at the police station and the police operation to arrest those involved is ongoing, he confirmed.
