Special Correspondent: The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) is expressing deep concern over the fire that occurred yesterday (October 18, 2025) at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. DCCI President Taskin Ahmed is simultaneously emphasizing the need for effective measures and implementation to improve fire safety and overall security arrangements at all levels of this major airport and other ports across the country.
The Dhaka Chamber President believes that since the country’s business community extensively uses this airport for international trade, including both passenger services and import-export of goods, such a fire incident introduces an element of insecurity and uncertainty in product transportation for local and foreign entrepreneurs. This, in turn, is likely to have a negative impact on the country’s global trade and overall economy. Such unexpected events will further increase the crisis of confidence and business operations for entrepreneurs.
As the cargo clearance process for import-export was halted due to the weekly holiday on Friday and Saturday, DCCI calls for the extent of damage to the goods awaiting clearance in the Cargo Village to be determined and for necessary compensation to be promptly ensured for the affected entrepreneurs. The DCCI President believes that to further expedite the country’s business activities, the cargo clearance process at the airport’s Cargo Village should continue even on holidays.
It is also noteworthy that the DCCI President appeals to the concerned government department to come forward and ensure necessary medical services for the rapid recovery of those injured in yesterday’s fire incident.
