Locals have taken to the streets against the alarming increase in drug trade and consumption in the Kerani Bari intersection area of Nazrul University Road in Wards 5 and 6 of Trishal Municipality in Mymensingh. With the slogan “Let’s go to war against drugs”, a human chain and protest program was organized at Kerani Bari intersection of Nazrul University Road at 11 am on Tuesday (June 17) by the initiative of the locals. Later, the angry crowd surrounded the house of the drug dealer by holding a protest march. At this time, the agitated crowd tried to vandalize the houses of the drug dealers without finding anyone. Later, the situation came under control with the intervention of the local police administration.
The protesters expressed anger at the police for not arresting drug dealers Mina Khatun and her brother Mukta Mia, along with dozens of other drug dealers, despite complaints. They alleged that the police punished the complainants instead of arresting those accused of selling drugs.
The locals have not received any redressal despite filing a written complaint with the local UNO and police station 15 days ago. The locals are angry with the local administration for this. They shouted slogans like “Fake, fake” while the police were present during the protest.
The speakers at the human chain said, “Drugs have spread in the society, the youth have become addicted. Drug buying and selling must be stopped.” They alleged that various types of drugs have been openly bought and sold in the Kerani Bari Mor area for a long time. Due to this, the youth of the area are on the path of destruction, and various crimes including theft, robbery are increasing. However, no visible action is being taken by the administration.
The speakers also alleged that the drug trade has spread under the umbrella of some brokers. They questioned where the administration has taken legal action against those involved in the drug trade.
Speakers at the human chain demanded an immediate anti-drug campaign in the Kerani Bari intersection and surrounding areas.
They warned that otherwise a larger program would be announced. A memorandum is scheduled to be submitted to the Trishal Upazila Nirbahi Officer in this regard.
It is worth noting that this movement was organized by the conscious people of local wards 5 and 6. Finally, the day’s program ended with an ultimatum of surrounding the police station at 3 pm on Wednesday if the drug dealers were not arrested within 24 hours.
