Staff Reporter:
Locals have expressed their anger over extreme irregularities and poor quality work in the construction of roads in three important areas of Dalua Union in Langalkot Upazila of Comilla. It was found on-site that the quality of the roads is very poor and the pouring work has been completed without properly placing girders or sidewalls on the sides. As a result, the roads have been poured in some places before the work is completed, and the sides of the roads have collapsed in some places.
According to the complaints of the locals,
From Mannara Bazar North to Momin Mia’s house,
From Miru Mia’s house to Majumdar’s house,
And from Lokman Saudagar’s house to Abdul Haque’s shop
The picture of irregularities is clear on these three roads. The pouring is incomplete, and the construction work has been carried out without filling and securing the sides of the roads.
A local resident said, “Every time they make minor repairs, they break down again within a few days. This is causing extreme inconvenience to people.”
In addition, a vehicle driver who plies on these roads said, “Major accidents can happen at any time because the road is being built on the banks of the pond without girders. A sustainable road needs to be built with sidewalls.”
Local contractor Kamal said on his mobile phone,
“The road has been washed away due to rain. So the work has been stopped for now. The road work will be completed after the rains are over.”
However, when asked about the matter, the concerned engineer Ahidul Islam said,
“We have ordered the work to be stopped after receiving the complaint. At the same time, a letter has been sent to the concerned contractor and the work has been completed in a quality manner.”
Nevertheless, the locals claim that government money is being wasted by repeatedly doing low-quality work in the same place. They demanded a quick transparent investigation and called for legal action to be taken against the guilty contractor.
