The miscreants have committed arson, vandalism and looting at the Jatiya Party office in Lalmonirhat district.
The incident took place on Saturday (May 31) at around 11 pm.
Local residents and Jatiya Party leaders said that the leaders and activists left the Jatiya Party office after holding a protest program in the afternoon as part of the program announced to protest the attack on Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader’s house in Rangpur. Later, around 11 pm, 15-20 people vandalized and looted the Jatiya Party office and set it on fire. Later, locals tried to put out the fire. Jatiya Party leaders protested the incident.
Shafiqul Alam, a pedestrian going to the BDR gate in Lalmonirhat, said that while going to the motorcycle, he saw a fire burning. After a while, people from the surrounding area came forward and tried to put out the fire.
Lalmonirhat Municipal Japa Convener Alamgir Chowdhury said, there was extensive vandalism and looting inside the Japa office. All the furniture inside, including cupboards, chairs, tables, etc., were vandalized. In addition, valuable items including the TV in the party office were looted. Later, some chairs were brought in front of the main gate of the office and set on fire inside and outside. We have informed our party chairman about the matter. A complaint will be filed with the police station soon.
Lalmonirhat District Party Office Secretary Rafiqul Islam Ratan said, we left the office around 8 pm. Later, at 11 pm, we heard on the telephone who or what had vandalized, looted and set fire to our office. We strongly condemn such activities.
At this time, mentioning Japa’s position and contribution in the mass uprising of 24, he said, we did not want such a country. The Jatiya Party does not do politics of violence. He also demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice after a speedy investigation into the incident.
In this regard, Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Nabi said, “I have heard about the JPA office. The police went to that place. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.”
