SM Suman Rashid:
In Amtali, Barguna, three days of continuous rain and the sound of thunder have miraculously lined up and fish are walking up the ears. Hundreds of people are interested in this and countless people are hunting for fish. As soon as the clouds call, the fish hunters fall. The taste of fish is a little different. Not only fish, there are many other species of fish including Tengra, Gulsha, Bhedi, Bam, Pabda, Puti, Bayla, which are more interesting than fish that climb up the ears and rise from the water to dry places. When anyone sees this scene, they are interested in fishing.
In Amtali Upazila, Gulishakhali, Kukua, Chawra, Haldia, Atharogachia, Amtali and Arpangashia, all over the place, light, moderate and heavy rains for the past three days, with the sound of thunder, koi fish are emerging from the water as if walking on their ears. One of the various species of fish in the rural area is the koi fish.
Nowadays, koi fish are often found in the market, but they are farmed koi fish.
On Wednesday (May 21), a visit to all the places in Gulishakhali, Kukua, Haldia, Atharogachia, Chaora, Amtali and Arpangashia unions of Amtali upazila showed that the three consecutive days of rain have increased the water level in fields, ghats and water bodies, casting a shadow of suffering on public life, while at the same time the great festival of fishing is falling.
Many people in rural areas have noticed that suddenly some fish, especially koi fish, suddenly rise to the surface of the ground and start jumping around ponds or water bodies. Such a scene is especially seen in villages during the rainy season, when the Ashar or Shrawan period is going on in the Bengali calendar. Those whose homes are near canals, canals or ponds are familiar with this scene. The villagers know this phenomenon as “fish jumping”.
The word “upstream” usually refers to moving against the current. But what is the real reason for this strange phenomenon? Science has explained it through a biological process called “taxis.”
Taxis is the movement of an organism in a specific direction in response to an external stimulus. For example, the directional movement of an organism in response to stimuli such as heat, light, sound, pressure, water, or current is called taxis.
This behavior of koi fish is specifically explained as “rio-taxis”. That is, the fish’s response to the current. At the beginning of the rainy season or during a thunderstorm, the water in a pond, canal or beel suddenly increases. Due to the pull of that additional water flow, koi, shung, magur, gulsha, etc. fish head towards a new water source in search of food and oxygen.
Md. Shahnur Rahim Risad Monti, a college student from Ward No. 2 of Amtali Municipality, said, “As soon as I returned home from college, hundreds of fish from the nearby reservoir came to the dry area through their ears and people started fishing. Seeing this scene, I went down myself and found about 100 fish.”
If there is no rain for a long time before the monsoon, there is a lack of oxygen and food in the water bodies. As a result, the fish become restless. When they get the early warning of rain or the first touch of the current, they start running in search of new water. During this running, many fish come close to the ground and at that time fish are seen jumping on the ground.
Amtali Upazila Fisheries Officer Tanmoy said, the reason for the massive increase in native fish species after three consecutive days of rain in Amtali is that we have been conducting campaigns in all places including rivers, ponds, canals, and bils to conserve native fish species. Native fish species including koi, tengra, gulsha, bhedi, baim, pabda, puti, and bayla have been found.
The number of fish has increased. After all, the only reason for the increase in these fish is the activity of our fish conservation campaign team.
