A construction worker named Maruf Hossain (18) died while working in a septic tank in Nijpara village of Mahendranagar union of Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat. He is the son of Abdul Khalek of Hiramanik village of Harati union of Sadar upazila.
On Saturday (May 3) morning, Maruf was working as an assistant to a mason in a new under-construction house of Zahurul Islam in Nijpara area. He fell unconscious soon after opening the mouth of the septic tank and getting inside to work. The mason himself also fell unconscious while trying to rescue him. However, he was rescued alive as a rope was tied around his waist.
On receiving the information, a fire service team reached the spot and recovered Maruf’s body using water after an effort of about an hour.
Mahendranagar Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Majid Mondal said, “This tragic accident occurred due to lack of awareness and safety measures.”
Fire Service Deputy Director Wadud Hossain said, “We quickly went to the scene after receiving the information and carried out rescue operations. Initially, it is believed that the death was due to toxic gas in the septic tank.”
Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Nabi confirmed the incident and said, “Initially, it is believed that the death was due to toxic gas in the septic tank. Legal action will be taken before the body is handed over to the family.”
