With the theme “Workers and Employers Unite to Rebuild the Nation”, International Workers’ Day (May Day) was celebrated with enthusiasm in Chapainawabganj.
On this occasion, a colorful rally was organized by the District Administration on Thursday morning. The rally started from the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, paraded through the main streets of the district town, and ended at the same venue. Following the rally, a discussion meeting on the significance of May Day was held at the District Administration’s conference hall.
The rally was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Abdul Samad, who also released balloons to formally commence the day’s celebrations.
Among the speakers were Akbar Ali, Chairman of Nawab Auto Rice Mill, representing the employers, and Saidur Rahman, President of the Motor Workers’ Union, along with Delwar Hossain Shobuj, General Secretary of the Hotel Workers’ Welfare Union, representing the workers. Jahangir Alam, Deputy Chief Inspector of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, Rajshahi region, delivered the welcome speech.
For the first time, National Occupational Health and Safety Day was also observed, with the theme: “Workers’ Rights, Commitment to a Discrimination-Free Bangladesh.”
During the discussions, labor representatives highlighted various demands concerning workers’ rights and called for their immediate implementation.
