Serious allegations of irregularities and corruption have surfaced regarding the distribution of heifer calves to fishermen under the “Conservation and Development of Indigenous Species of Fish and Snails” project in Nazirpur, Pirojpur. Although the guidelines specify that each calf should weigh 70 kilograms, beneficiaries have reportedly received calves weighing only 40 to 50 kilograms.
Concerned citizens have expressed that without ensuring transparency in project implementation, such irregularities may jeopardize the credibility of future development efforts.
The irregularities came to light during the calf distribution program held on Wednesday at the office of the Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer.
Commenting on the issue, District BNP Convener Principal Alomgir Hossain said, “The government is initiating projects to create employment opportunities, but irregularities are occurring. This is unacceptable. Cattle purchased with public money must be properly distributed to the people.”
Lal Mia, a beneficiary from Tarabunia village, said, “The calves were supposed to weigh 70 kg, but the one I received doesn’t even weigh 40 kg.”
There are also allegations that beneficiaries who refused to accept the underweight calves were told that they would not receive any livestock at all if they didn’t comply.
One affected beneficiary remarked, “If they give us calves of lower weight within our budget, that’s still tolerable. But why are they using measuring tape to weigh a calf? It’s a cow, not a tree!”
Regarding the issue, Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Sarwar Hossain told beneficiaries, “If you don’t want to accept the calves, we will cancel the entire project.”
Nazirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Fazle Rabbi said a written complaint will be submitted to the project director at the department regarding the delivery of underweight calves, and appropriate actions will be taken accordingly.
