International Desk: Israel has made a new proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza. Egypt’s Al-Qahira News TV reported that Cairo has received an Israeli proposal to start talks for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Citing a source on condition of anonymity, Al-Qahira News TV reported that the proposal has been delivered to Hamas. Egypt, a key mediator in the ceasefire talks, is awaiting a response from the Palestinian independence group Hamas. Al Jazeera reported.
Hamas previously told Al Jazeera that they rejected the ceasefire proposal that came to them through Egypt. Because the ceasefire proposal called for Hamas to disarm.
Top Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had essentially offered Hamas surrender, and that it was not a ceasefire agreement.
He insisted that Hamas would not surrender its weapons. He also said that there would be no discussion on this Israeli dream.
The top Hamas official said that when Netanyahu set the conditions for Hamas to disarm (a ceasefire), he knew that Hamas’s weapons were tied to their honor and that this was an impossible demand. He also said that he (Netanyahu) imposed these impossible demands to thwart any attempt to reach a ceasefire agreement.
Israel proposed a ceasefire at a time when the death toll in Gaza had already exceeded 51,000. The Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza said that more than 51,000 people had been killed there so far. Another 116,343 were wounded
