There is no security threat over the celebration of Pahela Baishakh, i.e. the New Year, said Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.).
The advisor said this while briefing reporters after a meeting on law and order and related matters at the conference room of the Home Ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat this afternoon on the occasion of the national celebration of Chaitra Sankranti and Bengali New Year and the New Year 1432 of Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Garo and other ethnic groups.
The advisor said that this year the Bengali New Year will be celebrated on a large scale. Keeping this in mind, security has also been increased more than before. Everything that is necessary is being done to ensure that security is not disrupted. Moreover, adequate measures are being taken to ensure that security is not disrupted during the New Year procession.
In response to journalists’ questions about whether there will be police in front or behind the procession, the advisor said, the entire New Year celebration, including the procession, has been organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. They will decide who will be where. He said, the police are citizens of Bangladesh. If everyone can hold a joyous procession, then the police force can also do it.
In response to journalists’ questions about the vandalism of offices and shops of various foreign organizations including Bata in the name of protests and demonstrations centered on the Palestinian issue, Lieutenant General Md. Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said, “It is our responsibility to ensure the security of the entire country. Action will be taken against those who committed these incidents. Already, 49 people involved in this have been arrested across the country. We have taken necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future, and security measures have also been strengthened.”
Responding to questions from journalists, Cultural Affairs Advisor Mustafa Sarwar Farooqui, who was present at the meeting, said that the Dhaka University authorities will decide on April 10 whether the New Year procession will be called ‘Mangal Shobhajatra’. Because they are the organizers of the procession. He said that details about the New Year celebration will be announced tomorrow, April 9, through the press wing of the Chief Advisor. He said that there will be a large crowd at this year’s festival. Our preparations are also extensive. He said that fairs are also being organized in different parts of the country on this occasion. Apart from Bengalis, 26 ethnic groups will participate in the New Year celebrations in a festive atmosphere.
The meeting was chaired by the Home Affairs Advisor and the concerned advisors and officials participated.
