8 people get life imprisonment, 12 acquitted in Sohail murder case of Tengarchar

The court sentenced 8 accused to life imprisonment in the case of diss businessman Sohel Pradhan’s 2017 murder in Ghazaria, Munshiganj and acquitted 12 as the charges were not proved. Besides, the court sentenced each of them to one more year of imprisonment without paying a fine of Tk 50,000. Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Masud Karim announced the verdict on Wednesday (June 21). The convicts sentenced to life are Kamal Molla, Jalal Molla, Billal Molla, Harun Molla, Mohsin Molla, Amir Hossain, Zakir Hossain and Jaber Hossain. Among them, Amir Hossain, Zakir Hossain and Jaber Hossain are absconding. About the first seven people convicted were brothers. Another 6 accused were present in the court. At the end of the verdict, they were sent to jail with warrants.

Meanwhile, the acquitted persons are Farooq, Rubel, Zakir Hossain, Imam Hossain, Mosharraf Hossain Mohan, Billal Khan, Anichur Rahman, Ali Akbar, Nuruzzaman, Waish Kuruni, Rana Molla and others. The court acquitted the two gaffers as the charges were not proved.

Special Public Prosecutor Mahbubur Rahman confirmed this fact. Confirming the matter, Special Public Prosecutor Mahbubur Rahman, the lawyer of the state in the concerned court, said that Sohel Pradhan (26) used to connect the dis line of Tengarchar village of Ghazaria upazila of Munshiganj district. His assistant was Jabed Hossain of the same village. The accused abducted Sohail from the Mirpur-1 goal square of the capital Dhaka on May 5, 2017 at around 9 pm due to previous enmity due to the grudges of village gangs. Then he was seriously injured. Thinking that Sohail was dead, the accused were taking Sohail in CNG from Tengarchar with the intention of dumping him in Meghna river. On the way, hearing the sound of the patrolling police car, the accused fled quickly leaving Sohail near the Jamaldi Brack office. Later the patrolling police found Sohail and rescued him and took him to Ghazaria (Bhaberchar) Upazila Health Complex and the police informed his family. When the family members came to the hospital, Sohail told them what had happened. On the advice of the doctor there, the family members took Sohail to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an ambulance for better treatment. On the way from there, Sohail called the names of the accused. Later, Sohail died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical. Sohail’s mother Sufia Begum filed a case on May 7, 2017 at Ghazaria police station.

The case was investigated and the charge sheet was filed in the court on September 23, 2017. Later on October 16, 2018, the investigating officer CID sub-inspector Syed Golam Sarwar filed a supplementary charge sheet in the court. On August 28, 2022, the court ordered the trial to begin by forming charges against the accused. During the trial of the case, the court accepted the testimony of 19 of the 28 witnesses included in the charge sheet. Sohail’s father Nasir Uddin expressed his displeasure when asked to react to the court verdict.
