155 Myanmar cattle and buffaloes seized in Eidgaon

A drive was conducted at Eidgaon market in Cox’s Bazar and 155 cattle and buffaloes smuggled from Myanmar were seized. The drive was conducted at Eidgaon cattle market on Tuesday (May 6) afternoon under the leadership of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sharmin Sultana. At that time, these cattle and buffaloes were seized and kept in the custody of Eidgaon Union Parishad Acting Chairman Abdul Hakim as they could not show valid documents.

Sadar AC Land Sharmin Sultana said that 155 cattle and buffaloes were seized and kept in the custody of the local chairman as they could not show any valid documents. Locals said that these animals were illegally smuggled from Myanmar.

Meanwhile, since the operation, it has been alleged that the leaseholder of Eidgaon market and several cattle traders have started lobbying in various quarters to release the seized cattle and buffaloes. Eidgaon Upazila BNP Organizing Secretary Mohammad Shukur has alleged on Facebook that some traders are even trying to make them look legitimate by making fake documents.

However, Eidgaon market leaseholder Abdur Rahim said that since Tuesday is the weekly market day, the cattle and buffaloes have been brought from different markets. All our cattle and buffaloes are legal. Acting Chairman of Eidgaon Sadar Union Abdul Hakim said that the seized 155 cattle and buffaloes have been kept in custody. Further action will be taken as per the decision of the administration.

In this regard, Eidgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Machiur Rahman said that the police were assisting in the operation. The operation continued till 5 pm. The seized animals have been kept in the custody of the chairman. Eidgaon Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Bimal Chakma said the operation was carried out based on the complaint.
