A Saudi woman proves the adage “better late than never” by going back to school at the age of 110.
Nawda Al-Qahtani, a 110-year-old woman, returned to her studies with the help of Al-Rahwa Center in Umwah Governorate in the southwest. Nawda Al-Qahtani is a mother of four children – her eldest child is 80 years old and the youngest child is 50 years old.
Since joining a local illiteracy program a few weeks ago, he has attended school with more than 50 people every day. The school teaches students of all ages the basics of the alphabet and some verses from the Qur’an. Al-Qahtani said he enjoys the lessons and makes sure he goes home at the end of each day to complete the rest of the class.
The Ministry of Education branch shared a post about Al-Qahtani in which the 110-year-old expressed gratitude to the Saudi king for his efforts to eradicate illiteracy. Al-Qahtani lamented the years that had passed without improving his education, and added “Surely seeing such a change in my life will change many things in the lives of others”. Al-Qahtani’s four children support her such interest and are optimistic about new developments in her life. They also believe that for a long time, he was illiterate and it was delayed by the will of Almighty Allah.
Nawda al-Qahtani’s 60-year-old son, Mohammad, takes his mother to school every morning and waits for him after class.
Son Mohammad said, We must know that this matter is not easy for our mother, who is more than 110 years old. But this is a move that is making all our family members proud.Al-Qahtani hopes the Saudi authorities will establish more schools for public education so that others can be educated and complete their education.
